District 16 wants to know of Special Needs Committee resources provided. Appointed as an ad-hoc committee to look into having the Service Manual printed in braille. There is an indication that there is a software that converts printed word into Braille. Exciting possibilities. Got a demonstration of reading in braille from Jamie as well as information on some of the things which are useful and meaningful to him.

Met with a blind member to get a perspective on services from his experiences. He has been able to procure braille and recorded materials without the help of his group. Likes to be asked to read from time to time. Feels following along in the literature helps him feel more involved. Items of discussion were 1) State library (Lansing) has the materials for check-out, 2) Translation into braille available through MI Dept of Corrections at a significantly reduced rate. Contact information forthcoming. 3) There is a need for other formats for information for the still-suffering alcoholic. Above resources will help.

District 4 expanding services by forming committees. District 6 conducting 3 meetings for shut-ins. Hearing impaired issues (continued): Request that the board consider financial help to group(s) that provide signers. Cost can be up to $500 annually. Criteria to consider: Signer is there for every meeting, signed meeting is published for hearing impaired, support be reviewed annually. Currently an ongoing problem with one group in Area 32 having a guaranteed signed meeting. Reports of persons traveling 75 miles to attend. Group shouldn’t have to pass the basket 3 or 4 times. Several groups have signers, but not at every meeting. District 6, in conjunction with Lansing Central, hosting a presentation “The Group” September 14, 9a-1 at 1915 E. Michigan Avenue, Lansing. Coffee and donuts and pizza. Call 517-377-1444 for more information. Area 32 delegate will be present.

Met with hearing impaired and signers. Currently only one meeting in 32 where there is always a signer. Problem: change in legislation will not allow students/non-certified signers to sign at a public forum. Groups are trying to pay signers on their own. Goal: to establish 2 of 3 locations in Area 32 which will assure signers. Reports of hearing impaired traveling up to 75 miles only to find no signer that meeting. Principle: shouldn’t be a group responsibility solely. District or area is a logical resource. Average signer cost is $65 per meeting.

The discussion included: how AA helps its members with special needs, and how AA is always inclusive, never exclusive, especially of those members with special needs. Committee members reviewed the new Special Needs Accessibilities Kit from the GSO, and shared how participating on this Area committee has been important to their service in carrying the AA message.

The committee discussed the importance of working with special needs due to the aging of baby boomers. Spoke of how Special Needs has combined with Treatment at GSO. Thank you to all who sat on the Special Needs Panel at the State Convention.
